School-gun law to be tested again |

(11/30/98) Every level of government wants to take away your rights. If, by chance, you get busted for allegedly carrying a handgun on to school property and your local authorities can't convict you, then federal officials will try to send you to jail.
The federal officials use the Gun-Free School Zone law, which bans possession of firearms within 1,000 feet of campuses. In 1995, the Supreme Court struck down the original version of the law because it violated states' rights. The ruling overturned the conviction of a high school senior who was arrested for carrying a concealed handgun and five bullets.
Following the decision, Congress revised the law to make it constitutional. Now, the federal government is once again trying to use the law to prosecute a student in San Antonio, Texas who brought a handgun to school. This case will probably also go before the Supreme Court in order to test the constitutionality of the revised law. The student faces up to five years in prison and a $100,000 fine.
Hopefully, the Supreme Court will strike down the handgun law which makes it more risky for students to protect themselves with a handgun.
